Fed: Car dispute heads for second week

The dispute that's almost shut down Australia's car making industry is likely to continue
with car component workers voting to remain on strike.

About 350 workers at Sydney's Tristar Steering and Suspension voted unanimously this
morning to continue their 13-day strike.

The strike has forced thousands of car workers across the country to be stood down.

Australian Manufacturing Workers Union national secretary DOUG CAMERON says workers
have rejected Tristar's proposal for an insurance-based scheme to safeguard $17 million
worth of entitlements if the company collapses.

The union says the bizarre offer would cost each worker about $750 a year to protect
their own money.

The dispute will return to the Australian Industrial Relations Commission at 3pm (AEST) today.

Tristar staff will also rally outside the AIRC this afternoon ahead of their meeting
planned for midday (AEST) tomorrow.
